Girl (18) given suspended sentence for concealment of birth

AN 18-year-old girl from Richmond’s Ndaleni area pleaded guilty to concealment of birth and was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment, suspended for five years, by the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court yesterday.

The teenager pleaded guilty before magistrate Reard Abrahams.

She said she had an affair with an older man and did not know how to tell her parents about it because she was embarrassed.

She went to Richmond from Ndaleni on May 12 and saw an advertisement for safe abortions and decided to terminate her five-and-half-month pregnancy.

“I spoke to a male person who agreed to help me with abortion; this male person put four tablets in my private parts and pushed them with his private parts,” she said.

When she arrived home she became sick and her mother hired a private car to take her to hospital.

On the way to hospital she gave birth in the car.

“I took the baby and threw it out of the motor vehicle through the window with the intention to conceal its birth.

I am remorseful for my conduct and I am pray to this honourable court to be merciful when passing sentence.”

Prosecutor Thandeka Mkhize described the offence as “gruesome” and asked for imprisonment and correctional supervision.

But Abrahams gave the girl the suspended sentence on condition that she is not convicted again of the same offence.

The prosecution will submit a query to the police about the man who gave her the tablets.

He may be charged with statutory rape and terminating her pregnancy.
