A NINE-YEAR-OLD girl was killed when she was struck by a car, while crossing Pope Ellis Road in Ashburton, yesterday afternoon.
Netcare 911’s Jeff Wicks said that it is believed that the girl had been walking at the roadside with her aunt and another woman when she attempted to cross the road.
Wicks said that she stepped into the road and then saw the vehicle approaching.
Indecisively, said Wicks, she froze and then tried to run back in the direction that she came from.
The driver was unable to avoid the girl and the vehicle struck her on the right side, he said.
On impact, the girl was thrown forward and Netcare911 paramedics found her in the middle of the road. She had sustained polytraumatic injuries and was declared dead at the scene.
Spokesman for the Transport Department, Bhekisisa Mncube, passed condolences to the girl’s family on behalf of the department and MEC Willies Mchunu, adding that parents and guardians should be more vigilant when crossing roads with children.
Meanwhile, a woman is in a critical but stable condition in the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital after she was struck by a car while crossing the N2 yesterday afternoon.
