Girl found murdered in bush in Doonside

AMANZIMTOTI — The heart-wrenching sobs of a young man echoed among bystanders, who were shocked by a murder scene in front of Shrangri-La Flats, in the dunes on Doonside beach yesterday.

In the bush lay the body of an 18-year-old girl with stab wounds to her neck.

SAPS spokesperson, Captain Carlene van der Spuy said, “There was an incident where she [the victim] was seen walking with an unknown male. She was later found with stab wounds to her neck.

“The victim was identified by friends from a tattoo on her neck. Dagga and empty dagga bags were found on the scene. We cannot confirm whether it is related to the incident,” Van der Spuy added.

She said the name of the victim would be released once her next of kin had been notified.

Police said the girl’s parents are believed to be from Johannesburg.

A young man yesterday wept at the scene of the murder, but it was unclear what his relationship to the young woman was.

The motive for the murder and any suspects involved were unknown.

A security guard on the scene confirmed that the incident occurred at around 11.35 am, when he was alerted by workers nearby. “They heard a noise and ran away, they told me. I found the body, the person was already dead,” he said.

Leon Joone, operations manager of the Amanzimtoti Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO), said that they received a frantic call from residents and immediately rushed to the scene.

“There was lots of screaming and shouting that someone had been hurt. When we got there we found a young girl. It was a very disturbing sight to see. We called the SAPS and got everyone out there. It really is one of those very sad days. At this stage information is very vague. No one saw anything, all that was heard was screams,” he said.

Joone said that in recent months crime in the area had been relatively low, especially since the festive season was approaching. He added, however, that there were a few isolated incidents such as this one that shook the community.

“There have been separate incidents that have occurred. It is just very tragic to see a young girl like this. We did our best to search for the suspect and hopefully the police will make an arrest soon,” he said.
