CAPE TOWN — A 10-year-old girl accidentally shot and killed her mother on Christmas eve with the pellet gun that was to be her brother’s Christmas gift.

The tragedy took place at Oude Westhoff in Bellville.

The mother, whose name cannot be released to protect the girl’s identity, died in hospital from the pellet wound.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel André Traut had yesterday confirmed the incident.

“On Christmas Eve, a 45-year-old woman was shot with a pellet gun in what seemed to have been an accident. She died in hospital,” he said.

A post mortem will be done.

Sister paper Die Burger was told confidentially that the pellet gun was a Christmas gift for the girl’s brother.

Attempts to get a statement from the family of the deceased was unsuccessful and more information about the incident is not known.
