Girl survives bite by killer spider

GEORGE — A southern Cape girl yesterday told of the enormous bone pain and headaches she suffered as a result of a spider bite.

A bite from the same species — a sac spider — recently killed a Western Cape woman.

The narrow escape of Caila Reinstorf (11) had her mother, Engela, in tears yesterday as she read a news report about how a spider bite killed the diabetic woman, causing complete organ failure.

Caila said she didn’t feel the spider bite her while she was on a camping holiday at Ballito in early July.

It has taken her six weeks to recover.

Her mother said Caila showed her a “pimple” on her left forearm and said it was terribly sore.

Two days later she started getting severe headaches, her arm swelled up and the pustule began oozing a discharge.

While the family were travelling home, it became clear the wound needed more than plasters and salve.

“When we saw the hole — as big as a 50 cent piece — we took her to a doctor in Bloemfontein,” said her mother.

Caila was was in hospital for two days and given intravenous antibiotics. A doctor diagnosed the wound as the bite of a sac spider.

She was hospitalised again in George.

“I thought she would lose her arm,” said her mother.
