Girlfriend on fire, man beaten up

2010-11-02 00:00

AN unidentified man is under police guard at Edendale Hospital after he was beaten up by Imbali Location community members yesterday afternoon.

The man’s pain is nothing compared to the pain suffered by his girlfriend, Thembisa Mkhize (23), after he allegedly doused her with a flammable liquid and set her alight.

It is alleged that the two were walking in Imbali when they had an argument. The man then dragged Mkhize into an open field.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said he produced a two-litre container of flammable liquid.

He doused Mkhize with the liquid and set her alight.

A passer-by saw what was happening and called for help. Community members nearby came to the woman’s rescue.

They allegedly beat the man up while waiting for police and an ambulance. Jeevan said the man had to be taken to hospital, along with the woman, due to injuries inflicted by community members.

He is under police guard.

A source from the hospital said the woman was badly hurt and her condition was deteriorating.

“The doctors are working on her as we speak. She is burnt from the head downwards, but we can only be sure of what’s happening once the doctors are done with her,” said the source.

Mkhize’s family declined to speak to The Witness, asking to be allowed to focus on monitoring their daughter’s recovery.

The man has been charged with attempted murder.
