Girls’ A-League: Vories bounce back in style

2013-05-21 00:00

THE Voortrekker first hockey team bounced back from two defeats in the Parklane Superspar Girls’ A-League to beat Howick 4-1 over the weekend.

“From the first whistle we made our intentions clear and continued to dominate the match,” said Voortrekker coach Charmaine Koekemoer.

In the 15th minute and against the run of play, Howick’s star player, Kimberley van Jaarsveld, intercepted a misdirected pass between the defenders and evaded Vories’ KZN U16 goalkeeper, Prudence Qwesha, for the opening goal.

The Voortrekker defenders managed to contain Van Jaarsveld from producing her best for the rest of the match by allowing her little time and space on the ball.

On the whole, Voortrekker dictated play and created numerous goalscoring opportunities, going into half-time with a 2-1 lead.

Vories’ Ciska Mostert scored her side’s opening goal with captain Carmen Potgieter getting the second — a cracker of a shot that whizzed past Howick goalkeeper Bronwyn Wishart.

After the changeover, the alert Potgieter bagged her second goal to stretch Vories’ lead to 3-1 when she pounced on the rebound off the Howick keeper from the initial shot by centre midfielder Odette Craig.

Nastasja Bondesio added to the tally by scoring the last goal, which at 4-1 left the girls in Blue with a three-goal winning margin.
