Girls’ cricket gets off to good start

2009-06-02 00:00

THE inaugural girls’ cricket festival arranged by the KwaZulu-Natal Inland Cricket Union was held recently at the Maritzburg Oval in Alexandra Park.

Over 50 girls took part and great fun was had by all, with some exciting games taking place.

The cricket was played in a mini-cricket format with teams of six coming from all parts of Pietermaritzburg and of all ages — from U9s to mums. Two rounds of fixtures were played, with each player getting a turn to bat, bowl, field and keep wicket.

The KZN Inland women’s players were on hand to give advice on the various skills of the game, as well as to spot future talent, of which there was much to see, boding well for women’s cricket in the region. Prizes for bowling, batting and fielding were handed out.

“The festivals are aimed at introducing cricket to girls in our region and promoting the game, as the KZN Inland Cricket Union aims to increase the numbers participating in the sport,” said the union’s manager of playing affairs, Garry Hampson.

“With one eye on becoming the top women’s cricket team in the country and having a majority representation in the South African women’s team, these festivals are the beginning of that process and we encourage the community to get involved. Whether you have played the game before or not, these festivals are a great way to start.”

The next festival date is planned for June 20 at 1.30 pm at the Pietermaritzburg Oval. For more information on women’s cricket, phone Hampson at 033 345 5387 or
