Girls hockey Finals Weekend

2014-07-25 00:00

THE Spar KZN schoolgirls regional hockey tournament reaches its climax at Thomas More College and St Mary’s DSG in Kloof tomorrow and Sunday when the Finals Weekend takes place.

The 10 regional winners have qualified for Finals Weekend and defending champions Durban Girls’ College are keen to retain the title. The winners of the Durban Central region have been in the medals for two consecutive years, with silver in the 2012 tournament and the gold last year.

Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School are eager to move from silver to gold, the PMB Central region winners having come second in the finals in 2011 and 2013.

Another PMB team sure to impress are St Anne’s. The Hilton-based school are the champions of the PMB North regional who won the inaugural gold medal. They came fourth last year. Newcomers Westville Girls’ High School, during the Highway regional, beat St Mary’s in an amazing game. St Mary’s, with two bronzes — and the gold in 2012 — makes Westville’s achievement even more merit-worthy.

Two teams returning for their second appearances at the grand finals are Kokstad College, who will be representing the Sisonke and Ugu region. Danville Park will be waving the flag for the North Durban region.

The first team to seal their appearance at the grand finals were Ferrum High, having dominated the Northern Natal region, while Empangeni High who won Zululand will be back for the third time.

Durban Girls’ High will also be making a third appearance as leaders of the Durban South region.
