Glenwood denied hopes of Grey upset

2013-08-13 00:00

WHEN Glenwood left Durban for Bloemfontein for their match against Grey College, they had a slender hope that they could cause an upset, as Grey have not been their usual high standard this season.

This was rapidly put to bed after the kick-off, as Grey were quickly into their stride, to eventually win by 10 tries to one in a 68-7 demolition of the Durban team.

Grey, in their last home match, were not going to disappoint their loyal supporters and they were at their best.

Glenwood, by contrast, made too many mistakes in the basics to mount a significant challenge. Also, there were three injuries where players had to be replaced in the first 20 minutes and this did not help their continuity.

Glenwood did have opportunities, but some big hits by Grey ensured the visitors did not score. At the break, Grey had a 30-0 lead.

In the second half, Grey used the field to its maximum by spreading the ball at every opportunity.

Glenwood did get in for their first and only points when centre Nkululeko Mcuma went over from a well-worked movement and Corné Vermaak added the extra points.

Unfortunately for the Durban lads, they could not get close again, as further injuries saw most of the bench take the field.

This result was without Grey’s two SA Schools rugby players — prop Ruan Kramer and fullback E.W. Viljoen — the latter called up to the side last week due to an injury in the SA Schools squad.

This match ended the season, which has shown some sparkling performances, but been disappointing, as Grey lost some games that should have been won.
