Glenwood players dominate Craven Week squad

The selectors spent quite a long time finalising the four teams that will represent KwaZulu-Natal at the three rugby festivals during July.

One of the major headaches in selecting the teams is to ensure the quotas are adhered to and they differ in the U18 selections from the U16. At U18 level there must be eight players of colour in the squad of 22 on the field at any one time. In the U16 quota there must be 11 players of colour with eight on the field at all times.

The teams all played their counterparts from the Pumas from Mpumalanga at Glenwood on Monday. It was only after these matches that the U18 Craven Week squad, the two Academy U18 sides and the U16 Grant Khomo Week team were finalised.

For the record, the U16 side won 16-3, the Academy A side drew 18-18 and the Craven Week side won 24-20. In the latter match, there was some good defence and moments when the attacking lines looked good.

From 15-3 in front, after two tries were scored by centre Kayde Fisher from Westville, the Pumas came back and led 17-15 at the break. The second half was disjointed, as reserves were given a run and three penalties by Fred Zeilinga from Glenwood, to one penalty by the Pumas gave KZN the win.

Glenwood, the top team in the province, dominates the Craven Week squad with nine players, with Michaelhouse, Hilton and St Charles having three each, two from Maritzburg College and one each from Ladysmith and Westville. The two Academy teams have a further nine Glenwood players, seven from Maritzburg College and five each from both Hilton and Westville.

There are three players who were in the 2008 Craven Week side, Francois Kleinhans (Glenwood), Nic Schonert (M. College) and Reef Nakin (Michaelhouse). A further five players were in the Academy sides last year: J. R. Jenkinson, Rory Schnetler, Brendon Groenewald (all Glenwood), Zwela Zondi (St Charles) and Siphewe Mafereka (Hilton). Adding to experience in the team are a further four players who played at the 2008 Grant Khomo Week: Fred Zeilinga (Glenwood), Keelin Bastew (M. College), Emil Schwartz (Hilton) and Siseko Jafta (St Charles)

The U16 squad for the Grant Khomo Week has eight Glenwood players, four from College, two each from Westville, Kearsney and Northwood, with one player from each of Michaelhouse, DHS, Sarel Cilliers and Creston.
