Goals galore on day one of Indoor IPT

ONE of the matches worth watching on day one of the SA Interprovincial Indoor Hockey Tournament (IPT) at the YMCA and GHS sports centres yesterday saw a local derby between the KZN Inland men’s first side and the KZN Inland seconds.

Tournament favourites KZN Inland I led 4-0 at half-time before coming away with a 7-0 win, but they were made to work hard by their second-stringers.

Two-time SA World Cup player Stuart Gower-Jackson netted twice for Inland I, as did prolific sharpshooter Gavin Jelley, while Karl Oftebro, Craig Haley and Ayden Shrives also got on to the scoresheet.

Hot favourites in the women’s tournament, KZN Coastal Raiders, were also made to sweat in earning their 5-2 win over the gutsy Namibia line-up after they had turned around level pegging on 1-1.

The under-rated Terri-Lee Chelin bagged a brace for the Raiders, while Emma Bray, Catherine Morris and Lee-Anne Keet got a goal apiece. Marci Venter put the Raiders on the back foot when she opened the scoring in just the third minute, and added a penalty corner to her tally in the second half.

The 18 teams will be involved in an amazing 18 matches today, which gives supporters an enviable number of quality matches to choose from as each side plays two matches on the day.

For home fans, the fancied KZN Inland first team men take on Eastern Gauteng at the YMCA at 9 am before the plum match of the day when they tackle Johannesburg heavyweights Southern Gauteng at the same venue at 7 pm.

The KZN Inland A ladies’ team face North West, a well-polished side, at 11 am at the YMCA before they meet neighbours KZN Coastal Mynahs at Girls’ High School (GHS) at 3 pm.

Other matches to look out for include the men’s derby between KZN Coastal Raiders and their fellow Durban side KZN Coastals Mynahs at 4 pm at the YMCA, while the 1 pm game at GHS sees Western Province, one of the favoured men’s sides here, facing Namibia.
