Gogo (62) wins car after standing feat

2014-01-28 00:00

IT was a competition that had the competitors dead on their feet. Keeping their hands on the car they wanted to win for hours on end was no easy feat.

And after about 50 hours of keeping his hand in a red box marked on the car, Bekisisa Mchunu, who was considered a strong contender to drive away in the prize, ended his chances when he shook hands with a well-wisher. He removed his hand from the car and that was that — knocked out by handshake!

Jabu Masinga (62) scooped the prize when the only other remaining competitor, Phindile Mncwabe, gave in to exhaustion on Sunday night after more than 50 hours on her feet.

Mncwabe slipped down onto her haunches to relieve her aching legs, and her hand slipped out of the demarcated box.

Masinga was calm and determined throughout the contest, and said she had constantly prayed.

“I wanted to win the car so I can use it to do church activities and help at my church,” she said. She has no driver’s licence and her helpful neighbours offered to drive her new car home.

The tired but elated Masinga said she would now go for her driver’s licence.

A friendly Mchunu came forward to congratulate her, saying he was thrilled to learn that he was not leaving empty-handed, winning a voucher for his tiring efforts.

Selgro Spar manager Rickey Joyce said it was fantastic to have a worthy winner.
