Gold in the bag: No holding Du Toit back

2012-08-31 00:00

LONDON — Natalie du Toit won her first gold at the London 2012 Paralympic Games in the 100 m butterfly for women (class S9) last night.

She recorded a winning time of one minute and 9.30 seconds, which earned her eleventh gold medal.

Du Toit will retire after the Games and has entered seven events in the hope of ending her career with another seven medals.

She must still compete in the 100 m backstroke, 100 m breaststroke, 200 m individual medley, and the 400, 100 and 50 m freestyle races. “It’s the first time in three Paralympics that I’m able to swim seven races.”

She competes in the 100 m backstroke heat at 11.38 am today.

Du Toit said after the heats yesterday that she was glad the end of her long career was in sight. “I have achieved in my career what I wanted,” she said.

About the race she said: “I’m relieved to have got the first race out the way but a little disappointed with my time. I think I could have done a bit more, but that was my race and I can’t complain now.”

Du Toit, who lost her left leg 11 years ago in a scooter accident, represented SA three years earlier at the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur. Two years ago she won three gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in India.
