Goldfish interview

2011-02-26 00:00

“RE-INVENTION of the DJ” is as close as you can get to describing what Goldfish do. Combining live instruments like double bass, saxophone, keyboards, flute, and vocals with samplers, effects, synths and a healthy dollop of freeform improvisation, Goldfish have hit a nerve on dance floors across the world.

Name: Dominic Peters

Age: Goldfish live forever

Family: Younger brother who always gets away with murder. I am the middle child, so the messed-up one, and an older sister who now lives in the UK. Two proud parents, who support me in everything I do, although some more disciplining of said cheeky younger brother would be welcomed.

Hometown: Cape Town

What’s the latest in the life of Goldfish?

I’m going to U2 tonight, but first, a surf.

What was the aim behind your latest album Get Busy Living, and has that aim been achieved?

We wanted to make an album that we were proud of and not write another Perceptions of Pacha. Our previous album was so well received by everyone that we thought the best thing we could do was let the songs write themselves as we were never going to make everyone happy anyway. We’re a bit older, a bit wiser and we’ve learnt a lot over the past few years travelling the world. Get Busy Living pretty much sums up our headspace musically.

How did Goldfish come about and why the name?

Goldfish came about because we were both studying music at UCT and playing in a jazz band to earn money as students and pay for tuition... We always used to chat about the music we were into all the time (Kruder & Dorfmeister, St Germain, Propeller Heads etc) and we wanted to start making that style of music live. Also it always irritated me that (most, not all) DJ’s were just playing other peoples music and getting more adulation from crowds than real musicians. So we took them on at their own game.

What is your ideal kind of gig?

An ideal kind of gig has so many factors. Obviously the venue, sound, the lighting and the crew being on point are all factors. Those are the factors you can control to some degree. But there are all the wildcards as well — the general mood of the crowd that day, the mental space we are in, where we are in the world, whether we should have eaten those spicy burritos before going on stage … When it all comes together though, it’s a magical experience where a show is co-created by us and our audience. Those kind of gigs are gold, and we strive to reach that every time we play.

Who do you look to for inspiration?

So many different things. Nature, music, surfing, people, travelling … life basically.

You’ve travelled extensively in recent months — Ibiza, South America and other parts of the world. Can you name a few highlights of your travels and why they were special moments?

Surfing in Maresias, Brazil was awesome … Cliff Jumping in Ibiza is a yearly mandatory experience. And we’ve had some incredible shows around the world, notably Amsterdam where we sold out three shows last year … Holland has gone mad for Goldfish and it’s quite strange to see another country go more crazy for our music than when we play at home.

Are you DJs or musicians?

Musicians. I don’t know how to DJ, by definition “the act of Jockeying Discs”.

What can South African audiences expect from Goldfish in the next few months?
