Golf: Nel makes sunny start at ‘Q-School’

2010-12-01 00:00

COLIN Nel made an excellent start to Qualifying School in Bloemfontein yesterday.

Nel, who is looking to secure a Sunshine Tour card with more playing privileges, struck a sparkling 67 to sit atop the overall leader board.

Nel’s opening round on the Schoeman Park layout puts him in a good position going into today’s crack-of-dawn start.

He will set off on the course at 6.30 am, and will look to take advantage of the serene, early conditions.

Fellow Maritzburger Christiann van der Merwe started with a 74, but admitted that there were a few nerves out there yesterday.

He is certainly not out of it, but he will need to collect some morning birdies when he tees off at 7.40.

The third local hopeful is Andy Britnell, who had a real baptism of fire.

His 10-over par 82 has set him back considerably, but he is certainly not the first to blow out in the heat of the contest.

He will be looking to show his mettle today, though, and he also has an early morning start.

The event runs until Saturday, where 30 Tour cards will be handed out.
