Golf: Victoria to hone junior talents

2009-09-22 00:00

WITH their Academy’s first year almost complete, Victoria Country Club (VCC) is moving into the next phase of providing golfing tutelage to the city’s budding golfers.

Under the leadership of club professional Stuart Woodroffe and with assistance from apprentices Ian Geldenhuys and Francois Vermaak, VCC is offering junior players an intense programme, which is scheduled around weekly time slots.

“Basically, we want to initiate month-by-month bookings, whereby a pupil knows that every Tuesday afternoon, for example, he or she will be working with us,” Woodroffe explained.

The programme will offer personal player profiles, with video analysis and incorporates the V1 international coaching system.

Woodroffe said the recent success of Victoria’s own junior team inspired them to funnel their energies towards young talent.

“We recently won the Composite League (which involves top junior teams from clubs like Kloof and Royal Durban) for the first time in a long time. So there is definitely something to work with.”

The programme is set to start in October, and is open to boys and girls regardless of where they are members. The vision, according to Woodroffe, is that the school can become a feeder to the academy, which is the next step for those pupils who are really serious about the sport.
