Golf rule book to be read by all players

2011-05-12 00:00

GOLF, it’s not only beginners who should read the rule book.

A young chap just starting to play the game asked, “There are so many rules of golf so which ones do I learn first?”

That’s a difficult question to answer ‘off-the-cuff’. But with just a few moments thought, one would recommend that the golf bible — the Royal & Ancient Rule Book — should be permanently acquired.

The best thing to do is to read the rules as they appear in the book. Section one of the book is the best place to start and that’s Etiquette: Behaviour on the course. It is such an important subject because etiquette is applied each and every time a golfer plays the game.

Then section two, deals with all of the definitions that are mentioned elsewhere in the book. These definitions are generally not technical words or terms.

There are a lot of golfers who feel that they don’t need to look at the rule book, but they will be surprised, they will learn something in the 14 pages of definitions.

For instance, do you know what the definition is of a burrowing animal? Or take the definition of “equipment”? I can hear you saying that you know what your equipment is, but you may not know every detail and it is important because if your ball hits your equipment, you incur a penalty stroke.

The term “loose impediment” is another worth reading. It should also be remembered that even the seasoned players, who have played the game for many years, tend to lose track of the rules because they are revised every three to five years. So it’s not only beginners who should have that golf bible close by, it’s the regular and experienced golfers too.

From the 19th hole:

A well known golfer boarded a plane with six kids.

After they got settled in their seats a woman sitting across the aisle from him leaned over and asked, “Are all of those kids yours?”

He replied, “Nah, I’m a sales rep for a condom manufacturer. All these kids are customer complaints.”
