Gongolo community stage sit-in

2012-10-30 00:00

AFTER 12 years of waiting for their land claim to be processed, the members of Gongolo community decided to take matters into their own hands.

They have staged a sit-in at the regional Land Claims Commission offices and vowed to remain there until they speak to the person in charge.

One of the leaders, Sthembiso Mahlaba, said that 12 years without progress by the authorities was a long time and they were tired of waiting.

The Gongolo land claim covers a vast area with about 15 farms. It stretches between Mooi River and Estcourt.

Mahlaba said they had decided to stage a sit-in after several attempts to secure a meeting with the department’s senior officials had failed and they recently learned that the department had planned to de-gazzette their claim.

Mahlaba said: “We were told that the officials we requested to speak to were out; we are prepare to sit here until Thursday or until they provide us with the necessary information.”
