Goods train derails in Pietermaritzburg, Spoornet mum

2008-05-09 00:00

Spoornet would not explain yesterday how a goods train including tankers marked with danger signs derailed in Pentrich, Pietermaritzburg.

It is not clear what the tankers were carrying as local management said they were not obliged to speak to the press.

The accident is believed to have occurred on Thursday night.

National Spoornet spokesman Sandile Simelani was not willing to elaborate on the matter as he said he could not provide Weekend Witness with accurate information since he had been contacted after office hours.

He said a number of cases were reported by the National Operation Centre yesterday and he could not speculate on what caused the derailment. "You can’t expect me to comment over the phone … If you can send me questions I will be able to take the matter up on Monday and provide you with accurate information. … you should have called earlier," he said.
