Gotta dance

New on the local screens this week are High School Musical and Death Race at Ster Kinekor and CineCentre, and Nights in Rodanthe at CineCentre. My Best Friend’s Girl now joins the Nu Metro lineup.

High School Musical 3: Senior Year is directed by Kenny Ortega. As seniors in high school, Troy and Gabriella struggle with the idea of being separated from one another as college approaches. Along with the rest of the Wildcats, they stage a spring musical to address their experiences, hopes and fears about their future. It’s the all-singing, all-dancing version of school, and is aimed specifically at the high-school audience. Starring Zac Efron, Vanessa Anne Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale and Lucas Grabeel.

George C. Wolfe directs Diane Lane and Richard Gere in Nights in Rodanthe. Her life is in chaos and she heads to the coast to look after a friend’s inn for the weekend; he comes to the inn to face his own crisis. And there’s a hurricane coming. The best place to sit it out is in bed (apparently), but when it is all over, they still have to face their demons. Will the hurricane-induced romance survive? Reviews have been pretty bad.

Death Race is a sci-fi thriller, directed by Paul W. S. Anderson and starring Jason Statham, Ian McShane and Joan Allen. Statham’s character is wrongly jailed, and then forced by the warden of a notorious prison to compete in the post-industrial world’s most popular sport: a car race in which inmates must brutalise and kill one another on the road to victory. Win five and you are free. Another one that met a cool reception overseas.
