Govender truck pulled off for faulty brakes

2013-09-21 00:00

A TRUCK belonging to Sagekal Logistics — the company that owns the articulated truck that ploughed into taxis, killing 23 people in Pinetown recently — was pulled off the road this week for suspected faulty brakes.

The driver was also arrested for allegedly having an “improper” driver’s licence.

Weekend Witness understands the truck ran out of fuel and stalled near Cliffdale on the N3. RTI officials responded as it was obstructing traffic.

The officers found a female driver from Zimbabwe at the wheel. A source said diesel was brought and the truck filled up. The vehicle was then taken to the testing centre in Pinetown, where it apparently failed the brake test.

Transport Department spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane would only confirm that a truck was impounded and failed the brake test. He declined to confirm or deny that the truck belonged to Sagekal, owned by Gregory Govender.

There have been several calls for Govender’s arrest in the wake of the Pinetown accident. Many people say he should also be held responsible for the deaths caused by his truck. Govender has responded that the truck involved in the horror crash was roadworthy, having been serviced recently.

Sagekal confirmed that their truck was impounded this week, but denied that it was unroadworthy. The company said the driver produced her passport and a certificate of registration and valid international driver’s licence at the scene. It said it accepts there would be greater scrutiny of its vehicles following the Pinetown accident, but now believes there is a deliberate plot to frustrate its operations.
