Governance: Police seek money ‘to pay vehicle licences’

2009-04-08 00:00

BUSINESSES and community members in Ezakheni near Ladysmith have received a request from the local police station to make donations towards the renewal of the station’s vehicle licences.

A donation form with the SAPS letterhead, the station’s address and the names of contact people was circulated in the area in the name of the police station, but the station commissioner of the affected station has distanced himself from the request.

SA Police Service spokeswoman Captain Charmaine Struwig said the Ezakheni station commissioner was not aware of the letter requesting donations.

She said the commissioner will investigate the matter to establish whether proper procedure was followed.

“The donations were requested without the station commissioner’s authority or knowledge. Where donations are requested, the SAPS has a policy for accepting donations which must be followed”. Struwig said if the investigation shows that the people involved were using the incorrect procedure, the matter would be addressed and rectified.

“But where it is found that those involved are in fact committing misconduct then disciplinary steps will be initiated”.

Struwig said businesses and individuals who are approached for donations by SAPS members should contact the station commissioner concerned to verify the need for the donation and to get assurance that the donation policy is being adhered to.

“This will assist police in combating corruption where police officials make themselves guilty of such actions”.
