Government to create database for smallholder farmers, starting with KZN

2011-10-25 00:00

THE Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Department is planning a drive to record all the smallholder farms around the country.

The aim is to keep track of what they are producing and the challenges they face.

The initiative will begin in KwaZulu-Natal and will extend to the North West province and then to the rest of the country soon after the end of the census project.

The registration will create a database that will improve communication in alerting smallholder farmers about and controlling disease outbreaks and make it easier to estimate the effect and damage due to natural disasters such as floods and droughts.

Steve Galane acting chief director, stakeholder relations and communications, said the drive should have begun early this month but was delayed to avoid confusion with the census project.

Galane said smallholders were targeted because there is no

database about their activities.

“The information about the larger commercial farmers is available in many of the large farming organisations,” he said.

Farming groups have long lamented the lack of detailed information on farming activities.
