Govt debt owed not going down

GOVERNMENT debt owed to the Msunduzi Municipality is not going down.

ANC councillor Jabu Ngubo said it seemed they were not winning the battle to get government departments to pay their municipal bills.

DA councillor Bill Lambert suggested that Mayor Chris Ndlela make overtures to new Finance MEC Belinda Scott to put pressure on offending departments.

Ndlela said he had spoken informally to Scott about the issue and these discussions could now be formalised.

Government owed over R14 million on its current account and over R120 million in arrears. However, residential debt to the municipality stood at over R800 million.

Collection was done to 70% in April and chief finance officer Nelisiwe Ngcobo said this was because they did not carry out as many disconnections. Ngcobo said residents normally came forward and paid when their services were disconnected. She added that there were also human resources challenges in the revenue collection section.
