Gowrie Invitational sees host of KZN Inter-provincial players as well as those from 'up North'

2011-01-13 00:00

THE third Gowrie Invitational Amateur golf tournament starts today at the picturesque links course in Nottingham Road, and another strong field has been assembled for the 36-hole event.

The annual event sees some of the country’s most promising amateurs flock to Gowrie, to take on the rugged links — and the notorious wind if it makes an appearance.

Last year’s winner, Dean O’Riley, has now joined the paid ranks, but there will still be plenty of quality on display in the two-day event.

Former winner Michael Hollick of Durban Country Club returns, while a host of players that made up the successful KZN inter-provincial side of 2009 are also in town.

The likes of Jared Harvey (Mount Edgecombe), Christiaan van der Merwe (Victoria Country Club) and Steven van Heerden (Margate), will be looking to provide a KZN winner, but they will have to see off a strong contingent from “up North”.

CJ du Plessis (Polokwane) and Hendre Cilliers (Pretoria) are both in the top ten of the latest national rankings, though experience of the peculiar bounces and slopes of the Guy Smith-designed layout will count a great deal more than rankings.

Today’s opening day will see the players combine their opening rounds with a “Pro-Am” involving local members, and the midday start may see the afternoon wind become a factor in the scoring.

Tomorrow morning’s second and final round will see just the amateurs tackle the course.
