Gowrie’s gusts put paid to Pro-Am event

2011-01-14 00:00

THE first day’s play at the third annual Gowrie Invitational was hindered by bad weather, with the majority of the field yet to complete their opening 18 holes.

Brendan de Lange was one of the few to complete his round, and he holds the clubhouse lead on one-under, 69. What had started out as a gorgeous day in the Midlands quickly turned gloomy in the afternoon, and the prevailing wind — and some devilish pin positions by the greenkeeper — made good scoring a tough proposition for some of the leading amateur players in the country.

Former winner Michael Hollick shot a somewhat disappointing 74, playing his final hole in late afternoon rain. Play was called off just before 4pm, with a combination of thunder and lightning reducing the ‘Pro-Am’ event to just nine holes.

While De Lange holds the club-house lead, there will still be several promising rounds under construction when play resumes slightly earlier this morning.

Jared Harvey, a KZN star, currently lies on two-under after 12 holes, and will be looking for more benign conditions this morning.

While birdies were hard to come by in yesterday’s blustery conditions, today’s second and final round will pose a different challenge to the field.

The tees were generously forward yesterday, to accommodate the corresponding Betterball Stableford competition with the local hackers, but the amateurs will have full reign today. Playing off the back tees there will however be no easy ride on the links.

First rounds tee up at 7.30am, the final round goes off at 9.30am.
