Grace College rider excels

THE KZN Provincial Sanesa eventing qualifiers were held at the Dolcoed Equestrian Centre in Lidgetton recently, with competitors coming from as far afield at Richards Bay, Mtubatuba and Hermannsburg.

The first qualifier was held on Saturday and Sunday. Sanesa (the South African National Equestrian Schools Association) have included eventing in their programme for the first time this year and the KZN selectors will be choosing their team at the national championships in October from the competitors at both qualifiers.

On Sunday, the winner in the 90 centimetre class, the toughest of the seven classes on offer, was local boy Guy Houston, representing Grace College in Hilton and riding Barnsley Boy.

Guy reversed the result of qualifier one in a narrow win over Jamie Lee McGregor of Grantleigh College.

He also finished runner-up to Clive Hyde in the 80 cm class on his other mount, Chestnut Charlie.

There was a strong showing in the primary school level three (80 cm) from talented young rider Rebecca Erskine of Clifton Prep in Nottingham Road.

Rebecca finished in first and second place on her two mounts, Golden Spirit and Bridesdale Indigo Blue, and handled the tricky cross-country track like a veteran.

With scores in the dressage section very close and most of the riders going clear in the show jumping, everything came down to the cross-country in the afternoon.

One unlucky competitor was Elinor Capostagno. She was first in the primary school level one class after the first two disciplines, following a second place finish overall in qualifier one. But she failed to negotiate the third jump on the cross-country track when her horse stopped for a call of nature. Elinor’s great rival, Nastasha Morphis, of St Mary’s DSG Kloof, won the class on her mount Ilizwe Fantasia.

The two qualifiers marked the opening of the new tracks at Dolcoed Equestrian Centre and there was praise for the facility from the judges, who generously gave their time on both days. The course designer, Priscilla Young, is a Midlands resident and an active committee member in eventing at national level. The centre is set among the timber plantations at the beginning of the beautiful Caversham Valley and is owned by Rhian Capostagno and her husband, well known SuperSport commentator, Andy.
