Grade 7s graduate: Hello hols, goodbye friends

2011-12-10 00:00

IT was a bittersweet day for grade seven pupils when schools closed yesterday.

While the day marked the beginning of the long-awaited holidays it also marked the end of primary school.

At Prestbury Primary, dux Nondumiso Mkhize could not hold back her tears as the memories of the five years at the school outweighed the joy of holidays.

“I have mixed feelings about leaving primary school and starting high school at St Anne’s next year. I am really going to miss everyone,” said Nondumiso as her friends consoled her.

Playing on the school soccer field for the last time, the pupils celebrated their results as they danced and jumped in the rain.

Claire Carter-Ferguson said she would rather think about her holiday trip: “I am going camping and visiting my friend in Cape Town, so I cannot wait for that. I keep telling myself that I will not cry, but I cannot help feeling sad.”

For her fellow pupils the high school pastures looked much greener and they were too happy to shed tears.

Simphiwe Zondi is looking forward to making new friends: “This holiday I am going to read and learn more stuff in preparation for high school — oh, and spend time with my mom. I am happy that it is the beginning of something new, but I am sad that I only get to move on with a few of my friends. However, it also means meeting new girls; I am excited about that.”

Schools reopen on 11
