Graduates will help municipalities manage finances better

WILL KwaZulu-Natal’s 61 municipalities all receive clean audits in 2014?

The provincial Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs hopes so and is banking on 72 finance and accounting graduates doing it for them.

The graduates each received a certificate from MEC Nomusa Dube during a graduation ceremony held in Pietermaritzburg City Hall yesterday.

KZN is among the provinces identified by the Auditor-General for falling down in its audit outcomes because of a lack of technical skills in municipalities.

Only uMtshezi Municipality received a clean audit in the financial reports for 2011/2012.

One of the graduates, Sduduzo Gwala, of Msunduzi Finance, said they had undergone specialist training to improve their knowledge in book-keeping, financial reporting and general accounting skills.

“We are more equipped and ready to improve the municipality’s finances after going through this course because it is designed to especially deal with municipal finances and accounting,” said Gwala.

Walter Mbhele, also with Msunduzi Finance, said he had read for a certificate in financial management and the 10-month course had prepared him to handle municipal finances.

He said they were ready to identify how municipalities should collect revenue and conduct payments.

Dube said they were on course to meet the 2014 deadline of Operation Clean Audit, which was set by all the country’s municipalities in 2009.
