Grandad marks 20th birthday

2008-03-01 00:00

Thambu celebrated his 20th birthday yesterday, 80 years after he was born.

The retired Pietermaritzburg tailor, who was born on February 29, 1928 — a leap year — gets to celebrate his birthday only once every four years.

He shares a birthday with his granddaughter, Kershnee Chetty (32).

Thambu believes that a healthy life is about positive thinking. "You are never old if you are positive," he said.

Another factor in his longevity is that he has never driven a car. "I walk every day," he said.

The family will throw a huge party today, and there will also be celebrations at the TPA hall in Northdale.

The year 2008 turned out to be a great one for Thambu: besides his 80th birthday, he celebrated his marriage of 53 years to wife Daisy on St Valentine’s Day.

Thambu was born in Karridene on the south coast. His family moved to Durban where he grew up. He has four children, 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
