Grandmother (92) raped, murdered after funeral

2013-05-14 00:00

YET another elderly woman, a 92-year-old in Bergville, has been raped and murdered.

A councillor in Ukhahlamba Local Municipality, Kenneth Simelane, said Nomzansi Mndebele attended a family funeral on Saturday at Green Point farm in Bergville.

At about 7 pm she went to the toilet, which is about 15 metres from the hut where she was sleeping, but she never came back.

People searched for her the whole of Sunday, but her body was only found yesterday morning, in a field.

“Where was she all along? We suspect she was kidnapped and raped because her dress was pulled up to her chest,” said Simelane.

They found a male’s underpants about 80 metres from Mndebele’s body.

The councillor, who was called to the scene when Mndebele’s body was found, said it was in ac horrible state.

“Her … body from the knees up had scratches as if someone had been dragging her.”

Simelane believes her killer may have been trying to dump Mndebele’s body in a nearby river but was distracted by barking dogs.

“We didn’t have any luck in finding her walking stick.”

The councillor said nothing like this had ever been seen in the area.

He was confident the police would apprehend whoever had killed Mndebele.

“We’ll catch them,” he said.

Mndebele’s daughter, Busisiwe Mabizela (52), said their grief was unspeakable. Her mother had been very active and loved church.

Mabizela said they told her mother, who lived at Rooihoek in Bergville, not to attend the funeral.

“But she was stubborn. She always said she was old and not sick. So we let her attend the funeral,” Mabizela said.

Mndebele had 13 children, only four of whom are still living, and 30 grandchildren.

Police have opened an inquest docket.
