‘Great imagination’: Wonder writer works on his eighteenth book at the age of 22

2011-06-28 00:00

AT the age of 22, Khulekani Magubane has already got 17 books to his name and is working on his 18th project for umSinsi Press publishers.

The Estcourt-born author says he cannot imagine life without writing.

By the age of seven, Magubane had already started scribbling “funny stories”.

In 2004, his mother met Felicity Keats, a trainer at umSinsi Press, whom she told about her son’s writing talent.

It was at this time when Magubane’s scribbled stories were turned into books.

Keats said she has been publishing this young author since he was in Grade nine.

“He loves writing, has a great flair for creating atmosphere and a great imagination,” she said.

Magubane is currently studying towards a B.Tech. in Journalism at Durban University of Technology (DUT).

The young author said creativity strikes at all times, and so he always keeps a notepad with him.

His first book was Thabo’s Rescue Team. Magubane writes about issues he sees around him, such as bullying and other issues affecting youngsters.

“My proudest moment was in 2006 when I published six books. But I think my greatest is still yet to come,” he said.

Magubane also enjoys drawing and is passionate about magazines.

He dreams of owning his own publication that would give a platform to young writers.

His favourite authors are Stephen King and Zakes Mda.

“Reading is very important because it helps with my writing skills. If you don’t read, people will pick it out in your writing,” he told The Witness.
