Great new album from Hard-Fi

ONCE Upon a Time in the West is the second album from Staines-based British band Hard-Fi and follows their critically acclaimed first offering, Stars of CCTV.

The band’s popularity has increased since that first offering. Now one of Britain’s biggest bands they have been nominated for the 2005 Mercury Music Prize and the 2006 Brit Awards (best British group category) and they’ve seen Once Upon A Time In The West top the UK charts in the first week of its release.

The album is less edgy than their first offering, but there are still plenty of excellent melodies and the thought -provoking lyrics which made Stars of CCTV such a success. I particularly liked the Ska-inspired We Need Love and Can’t Get Along (Without You), which reminded me of Oasis, and Little Angel which is a really rollicking number”. But frankly there are no bad numbers on the album.

The CD cover — which is bright yellow and displays the legend

No Cover Art — has proved a touch controversial. The band decided not to have any cover art, against the wishes of their record company, and reviews have been mixed.

I must say that I personally found it a little bit annoying. I love reading the lyrics and titbits from the band which normally appear on CD covers, so not being able to do so in this case spoilt the party somewhat. This is a great album — get it if you can.
