Greater Edendale Mall losing its shine

2013-02-08 00:00

THE Greater Edendale Mall was a source of excitement among residents when it opened, but now it is struggling to attract investors.

So says a report tabled at the executive committee (Exco) meeting in the city hall yesterday.

The R300 million development has 16 vacant shops, which is a cause for concern for the council.

The report states that rates payable on property depend on the ability of the property to earn money.

The city council was told that a consultant was appointed to conduct a survey about the reasons why residents were not shopping at the centre.

Various other projects that are likely to change the face of the city and are likely to increase the city’s revenue were also presented to Exco.

Msunduzi municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi said the majority of these projects would be implemented this year.

“The delay in implementing them was that these were privately funded and some of them required environmental impact assessment studies before they were implemented …

“That could take between six months to three years,” he said.

The following are major projects in the pipeline:

Camps’ Drift Waterfront (R1,6 billion), Liberty Mall Phase 3 (R500 million), Mpushini Business Park in Ashburton (R1,7 billion), Rita Light Industrial Park in Ashburton-Umlaas Road (R200 million), Edenvision Private Hospital in Archie Gumede Road (R300 million), Hlatshana Retirement Village, Murray Road in Lincoln Mead (R235 million), Hayfields Hotel and Residential on the corner of New England Road/Hesketh Drive (R200 million), Sirius Mixed Use Development on the corner of New England Road/Murray Road (R600 million), Polocrosse Site in Chatterton Road (R200 million), Cleland Road-Caravan Park (R300 million), Super Spar in Hayfields (R100 million), Twala Road Development in Imbali (R6,5 million) and Woodburn Shopping Centre in corner of Alan Paton/ Woodhouse Road (R100 million).
