Greater Edendale race: Growing enthusiasm for road-running event

2011-11-01 00:00

The road-running fixture was conceived by the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) more than a decade ago and initiated in conjunction with Msunduzi Municipality and the Msunduzi Tourism Association in 2007.

From humble beginnings five years ago, with a field of fewer than 100 runners, the race has gone on to attract well over 1 000 participants.

Organisers expect the fifth staging on Sunday, November 13, at the FNB Wadley Stadium in Georgetown, Edendale, to maintain the growing enthusiasm associated with the race over the years.

While the very first race consisted of only a five kilometre fun run, it has since grown into a 10 km Race and a fun run that is a major attraction for many local school children.

Entries cost R20 for the 10 km race, which starts at 7.30 am, while entry to the five kilometre fun run costs R10 and begins at 8 am.

Participants must be at least 15 years old for the 10 km race. Temporary licences will be available at the registration desk at R10 for runners who are not licensed members of running clubs.

For the five kilometre fun run participants have to be over nine years of age to enter.

The men’s and women’s winners will each receive R2 500 in addition to other category prizes.

Prize money will be awarded to the first three walkers in both the men’s and women’s race. Every finisher will take home a medal.

The first two schools with most finishers will each walk away with a computer.

CMA’s marketing co-ordinator, Thami Vilakazi, said, “The Greater Edendale race goes a long way in uniting communities in a common goal of co-operating and bringing much needed development to their locality.”

Entries can be made at Wadley Stadium from 11 am to 2 pm on Saturday, November 12. Registration will be open on the day of the race from 5 am to 7.30 am.

Security and safe parking will be provided. The police, municipal security and traffic police services will be on hand to ensure that runners are safe.
