Greatest ever rowing final, says British great Sir Matthew Pinsent

THE way the South Africans hauled in the rest of the field was praised by two of the greatest Olympic rowers ever.

Sir Matthew Pinsent, who won four golds between 1992 and 2004, told the Road to London: “Impartially speaking, you have to say it was the best final ever at the Olympics.”

Sir Steven Redgrave, a five-time Olympic champion, said: “For them to come from behind with so much power and win South Africa’s first rowing gold was unbelievable.

“They were far behind, but they lifted themselves … It was an outstanding victory.”
