Green light for Durban A1

2007-12-15 00:00

The A1 Grand Prix returns to Durban from February 22 to 24 after the KZN Agriculture Department this week granted authorisation for the city to host the event.

However, organisers have been instructed to submit weekly construction environmental audit reports to the department as dune vegetation must not be “interfered with during the commissioning, operation or the decommissioning phase”. Environmental manger Haroon Karodla told Weekend Witness that during the last event, there was some encroachment on the conservation area. “There was litter as well because people were too close,” he said.

The decision to grant permission for the major event was a “thorough and consultative process between the applicant, interested and affected parties”, read a statement issued by the department on Wednesday.

In turn, frail and vulnerable persons residing in the sea-facing buildings will be provided with alternative accommodation, if they are not able to tolerate the noise during the event.

“We have not stipulated any age because we didn’t want to be discriminatory.

“If people feel they fall under the vulnerable group, they will be accommodated elsewhere provided they furnish convincing proof,” said Karodla.
