Green spaces

2008-07-03 00:00

A timely article in this newspaper by Morag Peden, a local inhabitant and specialist in environmental matters, has warned of the need for this city’s officials and policy makers to remember the importance of the eastern bushveld in the current excitement about metro status for the city. A powerful argument is made for this green space to be retained rather than be overtaken by exuberant plans for further urban expansion or industrial development.

Apart from the sheer natural value of this stretch of land in all its delicate biodiversity, it makes a significant contribution to the lessening of air pollution across the city because plants absorb carbon dioxide emissions. It is not for nothing that great cities such as London and New York have large spacious parks at their very centre. Here in Pietermaritzburg-Msunduzi is bushveld on the periphery which must at all costs be kept undefiled.
