Grey’s: mum’s the word on conjoined twins

2008-12-16 00:00

A wall of silence surrounds conjoined twins who are being cared for in Pietermaritzburg’s Grey’s Hospital.

According to sources, a teenage mother gave birth to the conjoined twins at a Durban hospital last month. The 17-year-old mother and her twins were transferred to Grey’s last week, where they are under special care. The mother is allegedly undergoing psychological counselling.

The media has been kept in the dark about the birth of the rare twins and the father is apparently determined to keep it that way.

The Witness has tried in vain to talk to the father, who vehemently refused to be interviewed. He repeatedly said that he was “not interested” in talking about his children. He also refused to give permission for The Witness to see the twins. The health status of the babies is not yet known.

KZN Department of Health spokesman Leon Mbangwa could not provide details about the twins besides confirming their existence, as the parents had not agreed to allow the department to speak to the media.

The Witness visited the hospital last week and found that staff members there are abuzz with news of the conjoined twins. Many staff members said they have visited the special ward to see the twins, believed to be girls.

The Witness was unable to establish whether the twins will be operated on or the prognosis for their survival.
