Greytown six plead not guilty

SIX men have pleaded not guilty in the Pietermaritzburg High Court to 13 charges of murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition arising from an armed robbery at Aheers Superstore in Greytown on November 28, 2007.

One of the alleged murder victims was a police inspector, Ageet Mewa, who was with colleague Navin Maharaj in a marked police car nearby when the robbery took place. Some of the robbers opened fire on the police vehicle as it approached.

Another man, Cijimpi Albert Mdlolo, was killed in a shoot-out between police and the gang.

A private security guard, Yogamberen Kariem, was robbed of his pistol and three motorists were hijacked by the robbers, who escaped in their vehicles.

The accused are Tolinhlanhla Zuke (22), Mbongeni Zungu (35), Musawakhe Maphumulo (22), Bhekuthula Zuma (23), Siyabonga Cebekhulu (23) and Wiseman Zuke (23).

A former co-accused, Bheki Xulu (27), will testify on behalf of the prosecution during the trial, which resumes next week.
