Griekwastad case costs R2,6?mln

KIMBERLEY — The case following the murder of the Steenkamp family has cost millions of rand.

Police officers, legal experts, witnesses and court personnel have spent thousands of hours and millions of rand to provide Judge President Frans Kgomo with the facts to determine who shot Deon (44), Christel (43) and Marthella Steenkamp (14).

At this stage, the cost of defending the under-aged accused (who is 17) amounts R2,6 million. The cost of the teenager’s new attorney, Riaan Bode, has not yet been added to the current billing.

The case has also demanded large financial outlays from the police, state and even media companies. The taxpayer is footing the bill for the police and state, but the teenager has to pay his own legal fees. The R2,6 million includes the cost of an unsuccessful application for funds from the murdered family’s estates, as well as payments to experts in court.

Last March, part of the costs were paid from the estates of the Steenkamps. The new executor then asked that the court must first give permission before any new payments were made towards legal fees.

The teenager’s legal representative had advised him to sue for more money from the estates. The civil claim was dismissed, but cost the teenager R425 188. His guardian has since complained about the advocates’ high legal fees of R244 914 and negotiated a discount.

The case resumes on March 18.
