Gripping, fast-paced intrigue

2011-12-28 00:00

BETTER known for his series of

detective novels containing police detective Harry Hole, this book is one of Nesbo’s stand-alone efforts.

It is a fast-paced crime thriller that seems to take a fresh look at the world of high-brow recruitment. Here, people are worth millions for their reputation. For the headhunters, they are worth a small fortune in commission.

The story grabs from the outset, and leads the reader through the devious motions of a headhunter who seems to play with his clients careers recklessly. He questions them rigorously and invasively, using an FBI technique to penetrate their defenses.

His advice to them is brash and tough, but soon one realises that our HR guru does not really have their best interests at heart. Headhunters is a dazzling, relentlessly paced thriller, combining classic thriller elements with a carefully complex plot that never fails to surprise.

Roger Brown is short and arrogant, and he always seems to get his man. His reputation guarantees him an abundance of promising candidates for top positions. But Brown has one weakness — his gorgeous wife Diana. It is his obsession with her that leads him into the clutches of a ruthless opponent who double guesses his every move. The result is a breathless game of cat and mouse.

The reader is plunged into a story where the moral high ground shifts, and the graphic scenes are worthy of a movie such as The Bourne Identity . Brown’s arrogance may indeed be his undoing, but the reader somehow feels that underneath that persona he is worthy of respect.

It is a clever book and a gripping read.
