Griquas innings washed out in 40-over clash with Inland at PMB Oval

2009-10-26 00:00

KZN Inland’s Provincial Challenge 40-over match against Griqualand West was drawn at the Maritzburg Oval yesterday when a downpour after lunch put paid to any thoughts of the visitors beginning their innings.

Inland disappointed in their 165 for nine in a competition that has been reduced to 40- from 45-over cricket and includes a number of interesting innovations such as 12 players in each side. With 11 batting and 11 fielding, the extra player — perhaps a batsman, bowler or all-rounder — adds more impetus as a “super sub”.

That Griquas were in the pound seats had they been able to bat is indisputable.

Inland had given themselves a reasonable launch pad at 122 for four with 70 balls left in the innings. Player/coach Doug Watson was well set and Brad Moses had just struck a glorious six over extra cover off impressive Griquas seamer Granville de Wee.

A defendable 200 to 220 total was on the cards, bearing in mind the low, slow nature of the pitch, but it was not to be as Moses and Watson fell within four balls of each other, disciplined Griquas bowling and fielding combining for a harvest of five unexpected wickets for 16 runs.

Yesterday’s pitch, which made batting hard work, was in marked contrast to the salad days of the preceding three-dayer, in which four centuries were scored by the hosts’ Chad Barron, Watson and Mario Olivier, as well as classy Griquas opener Reeza Hendricks — the innings of the match. And those four tons were scored in only two days after day one was washed out to ruin any chance of a result. Indeed, 735 runs in two days at an average of 57 per wicket gives an idea of what the bowlers were up against.
