Griquas will provide test of KZN Inland’s skill and resolve

2009-10-22 00:00

CAPTAIN and wicketkeeper/batsman Tim Drummond’s KZN Inland side meet Griqualand West at the Maritzburg Oval beginning today with a three-day match and ending with Sunday’s 45-over clash.

By their standards, reigning provincial three-day champions Griquas have not had the perfect start this season, having drawn with both Boland and Namibia, while they beat Namibia in their one-dayer.

Griquas have an exciting line-up that includes the precocious talent of 20-year-old Reeza Hendriks, the Kimberley-born right-hand batsman who made his first-class debut aged just 17.

Hendriks’s last first-class match was for his franchise, the Eagles, against the Highveld Lions a month ago. Opening the batting, Hendriks made a first-innings 65 against the likes of fast bowlers Friedel de Wet and Cliffie Deacon, and shared in a 135-run partnership with none other than Boeta Dippenaar. He already has a first-class average of 35 with a highest score of 151 not out.

Highly experienced Griquas captain and wicketkeeper/batsman Wendell Bossenger (32) has played 218 matches at this level with seven centuries at a combined average of over 32.

Of course, these are just some of the players in an accomplished side that should provide a searching test of Inland’s skill and resolve.

And Inland are not helped by the unavailability of batsman Glen Addicott, who hit a century against Western Province, and the in-form Morné van Vuuren for the three-day match. Both will be back for Sunday’s 45-over shootout.

Standard’s Chad Barron steps into the Inland three-day team, which must improve in every department. The comprehensive defeat against KZN Coastals in the one-dayer and very narrow escape in the three-day match means that the Inland players will be short of confidence.

Inland also lost to WP in the one-day match and drew the rain-affected three-dayer, so they have yet to taste victory this season — a situation which will hopefully spur them on to greater things against the men from Kimberley.
