Groundsmen happy with pitch condition

JOHANNESBURG — Rain and cricket have never been good bed fellows.

Despite this, the groundsmen at SuperSport Park have welcomed the heavy rain which descended over the Centurion area during the past few days.

The first Test between South Africa and Australia starts on that ground next Wednesday.

“It could not have been better for us,” said groundsman Rudolph du Preez. “We have only just about finished spraying fertilisers on the pitch and outfield when this lovely rain came down.

“We will cover the pitch at night and ensure that there are no pools on the outfield.

“We have been proactive and the most important preparation for the pitch has already been completed a month ago, thus the rain does not really interfere with our preparations.

“If it still rains heavily by Friday and Saturday, we will stress somewhat but at this stage everything is still under control,” said Du Preez.

According to the weather bureau, the rain should clear up by today but there still may be some showers until Thursday.
