Group to look at Indians in the ANC

2008-08-25 00:00

A decision to form a committee that will address the perceived neglect of Indian members in the ANC was taken on Saturday at a meeting at Kingsmead Sahara.

"The ANC is entitled to its opinions and so is the [Indian] community. If the community wants to form a structure, then it will do exactly that," said businessman, Haresh Ouderajh.

He was also one of the organisers of the meeting that was attended by about 120 people, some of whom claim to be members of the ANC and others from the Minority Front.

Those who attended the meeting voiced their disappointment at what they consider to be a "purge and the perceived sidelining" of Indians within the ruling party ranks. Some said they felt "powerless and leaderless" and this is why they want to revive the Natal Indian Congress (NIC).

However, Ourderajh said the meeting did not have revival of the NIC as an important item on the agenda. "We wanted to gauge the opinions of Indians on the political way foward without being prescriptive," he said.
