Gruesome murder in Howick

2011-02-07 00:00

THREE youths from the Howick West area have been arrested for the brutal murder of a 52-year-old man from the area on Friday night.

Dayanand Hethor was found lying dead in a field in Howick West by members of the community who were heading to the community hall to register as voters for the local government elections.

He was apparently assaulted and stabbed to death by three youths from the area.

His family said he had stab wounds all over his body, including his neck, and one side of his face seemed to have been bashed in.

Three youths aged between 19 and 25 years were arrested in connection with the killing on Saturday afternoon.

Ramesh Hethor, the brother of the dead man, said they were notified by community members that his brother had been found dead.

“The people who know both of us came to my house and said someone resembling my brother had been found murdered near the fields and that I should came and have a look.”

Ramesh said that when he and his two sons went to the scene they found his brother had been brutally murdered.

“The scene was quite gruesome as he had sustained stab wounds all over his body; even in his neck he had stab wounds.”

He described his brother as a peaceful man who never attracted trouble and did not deserve to die in such a manner. “In all the 52 years that I have known him he has never once been arrested or implicated in any trouble.”

Shanitha Hethor, Ramesh’s wife, said the incident had devastated their family.

“Dayanand was the youngest of eight children and he was the first one to go; this has devastated his two daughters.”

“The way he was killed him was so gruesome that when one of my sons came back [from viewing the body] he just collapsed on the floor and slept there and I believe it was because he just could not take what he had seen there.

“The people who did this did not have to kill him; if the intention was to rob him they could have just done that and left him alive,” she said

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan confirmed that three people were arrested on Saturday in connection with the murder.

She said the police had confiscated a knife from one of the suspects which they believe is the murder weapon and they also found a wallet belonging to Dayanand during a search of one of the other suspects.
