Guard dies after armed robbery at Hammarsdale

2012-02-20 00:00

A SECURITY guard died on the way to hospital following an armed robbery outside a Hammarsdale store.

Another guard was injured, as were three patrons.

A spokesperson for the store, Boxer Cash & Carry, declined to comment on the Saturday morning incident yesterday, saying police were still busy with investigations.

He confirmed, however, that two men and a boy were injured when shots were fired outside the shop.

The spokesperson said the events unfolded very quickly and that he had not seen the robbery take place.

The KwaZulu-Natal police media centre said two guards were shot at by a gunman while they were carrying money boxes from the shop to their vehicle at the KwaMcoyi shopping centre.

Two more gunmen meanwhile held up two other security guards at gunpoint and robbed them of their firearms and three boxes of cash.

The amount of money inside the boxes was not disclosed.

The robbers fled the scene in a blue Toyota Camry.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said the name of the guard killed would not be released until his next of kin had been informed.

Police were still following up information about the customers who were wounded in the shooting, he said. They had already left the scene when police arrived.

A spokesperson for G4S Cash Solutions said the company deeply regretted the “senseless” killing of one of its security officers and extended its condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
