Guard doused with diesel

2011-06-25 00:00

AN on-duty security guard had the shock of his life when four robbers tied him up, poured diesel all over his body and kept him soaked for about four hours in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

After the criminals had left, the 32-year-old man was rushed to Northdale Hospital because the fuel also got into his eyes.

The criminals arrived at Cousin Steel Company in Mkondeni at about 10.20 pm and left at about 2 am after stealing roughly 2 000 litres of diesel from the company. They also took the guard’s cellphone and the company gate’s remote control.

“The men entered the premises by jumping over the palisade fence, which has sharp spikes on top. They caught the unsuspecting guard and tied him up before pouring the diesel on him,” said company co-owner Craig Cousin.

“They did not beat him up, but they just kept him with the diesel over his body.”

They then cut the lock at the gate and brought in many 20-litre containers to fill them up with diesel. Police later found empty 20-litre containers outside the gate.

Cousin said when the men left, the guard got help from other people inside the premises. He said he arrived at the premises at about 4 am to find the guard in a state of shock.

He said the police searched for the criminals around the area but found no one.

“Police could not pick up fingerprints because they were destroyed by diesel.”

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan has appealed to anyone who might know the whereabouts of the suspects to contact Alexandra police station at 033 845 7724.
